1629 King James "Authorized" Bible, editio princeps (FIRST EDITION), Cambridge University Press, Tho: and John Buck. Medium Folio. The first complete "editorial revision" of the KJ Bible. RULED IN RED throughout. Reference: Herbert 424. COMPLETE as intended by the printers: ENGRAVED TITLE, BOCP, PRELIMINARIES, OT, AP, NT TITLE, NT, BLANK, BPCEM, TABLE. Both Titles included. Printed on Italian, "fine, white, linen-rag paper"-- exceptionally nice; w. wide margins (leaves 11 15/16" x 7 15/16"). FORE-EDGES tooled in geometric patterns of stars and diamonds. In antiquarian terms, Bible is in "nearly fine" condition, but see ink spill on final leaf of the Apocrypha. SUPERBLY TOOLED, multi-panel binding in contemporary style, of "British vegatable tanned calf" (archivally safe); w. 5 raised bands to the spine and gilt lettering. End-pages using 1625 antiphonal music sheets. Probably only a few such Bibles still exist in this superior state of preservation and completeness. Bible is set in a felt-lined linen cloth slipcase, and is being sold with a "Cambridge Ensemble" that includes: (1) a very large c1220 illuminated manuscript leaf, produced in Cambridge, Acts 3-7; (2) a 1638 KJ Cambridge Bible leaf, reled in red, title to Matthew 1-3; (3) Engraved Title leaf to the Greek NT, printed at Cambridge, 1632; (4) New, NIV Cambridge Bible, Premier Reference Edition, on supple goatskin, in a Rosewood Presentation Box; (5) New, 3-vol set of D. McKitterick's "A History of Cambridge University Press"; and (6) New, D. McKitterick's "Four Hundred Years of University Publishing and Printingin Cambridge, Catalogue of an Exhibition" and (7) a copy of B. J. McMullin's hard to find 1984 article "The 1629 Cambridge Bible" comparing 39 copies in the UK. This Ensemble ($3K value) contextualizes a beautiful and rare FIRST EDITION Bible.
