Description

ROMANS 3:20-7:19. “The Righteousness of God” (3:21). Printed in Basel, Switzerland, by Johann Froben, October 27, 1495. Octavo size: 5.75″ x 4.25″. One of the very earliest printed octavo Bibles, as handy for travel as the popular “pocket bibles” of the 13th century. Reference: Goff B598; GW 4275. Ruled in Red. With 4 hand-painted initials in RED and BLUE. FINE condition; small hole at bottom line (see pics). COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature. Includes “Origins of the Vulgate Bible” with an English translation of important verses. Text expresses Paul’s understanding of how, exactly, Jesus’ death and resurrection brings about “justifying faith” to people (see Ch 4), both Jew and Greek alike, and thus how God is himself “righteous” or “justified” (same Greek word) in doing so. A defining text for the 16th century Reformation.
