2 MACCABEES 12:11-14:9. “War and Peace”. Rare, VERY LARGE mss. 11.5″ x 8″ handwritten and illuminated in Italy, c.1245, on fine sturdy vellum. EXCELLENT condition; slight ink oxidation on verso. Uncut with very wide margins; shows signs of previous framing (shadows). With 2 scrolling initials. Text depicts the Jewish war with the Selucid King Antiochus IV and its resolution, c.163 BC, giving Israel a very brief respite before the Roman occupation. A wonderful example of an unusually large Bible leaf. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper. Manuscript and COA set in a Larger museum-quality Bifold Portfolio, approx. 13.5″ x 10.5″. Note that the majority of manuscripts are of smaller size, about 6″ x 4″, and are found under the Trifold Portfolio Category.
