Handwritten and illuminated in Paris, c. 1250. With 3 illuminated capital initials, “H” (5-6 lines high) at Isaiah 66, extended “I” (25 lines high, apart from extenders the whole length of the leaf) at the Prologue to Jeremiah, and blocked “V” (6-7 lines square, plus an 8-line extender) at Jeremiah 1. Rubricated throughout. Illuminated “V” (for Verba, “words”, though it looks like a block-shaped “U”) in Blue, Burnished Gold, Grey, Brown, White, and Silver), with inhabited animal faces and a “tail” extender. Finely detailed. 46 lines per column, 13 lines per inch. EXCELLENT+ condition; very clean, slightly shaved margins, thin strips of nearly invisible hanging tape at upper corners (see pics). COA on premium “gold leaf” paper. Text from Jeremiah contains the famous Call of Jeremiah in which God puts his words in Jeremiah’s mouth. Text from Isaiah promises a New Heaven and a New Earth in the age to come. See English translation opposite. A stunning example of three types of illuminated or painted initials on a single leaf, with words that have shaped the Gospel promise and the Church’s ministry.
