ISAIAH 10:1-13:22. “The Wolf and the Lamb” (11:6). RARE FIRST EDITION. Biblia Latina. Printed in Nuremburg by Anton Koberger, 1475. Folio, 15.7″ x 10.7″. With 3 Handpainted Capitals, in Red and Blue; and rubricated throughout. Leaves are a beautiful creamy color, on very heavy vellum-like paper. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper. EXCELLENT+ condition; light stain to outer margin (see pics). This rare edition is the FIRST of Koberger’s Bibles, the FIRST Bible printed in Nuremburg, the 18th printed Latin Bible, and the 23rd printed Bible — ever! Only 104 copies of this Bible are recorded extant!!

Text includes several striking verses presaging Isaiah’s later and fuller proclamations of the New Heaven and the New Earth; see especially 11:2 and 6; and 12:2.  William Blake likely based his well-known poems “The Tyger” and “The Lamb” (c.1793) on 11:6, where the tyger represents the inscrutable acts of God that defy human reason and the lamb represents Christ. For smaller incunabula leaves, see the several Biblia Sacra under “Bifold Portfolio”.
