Description

“Creation of Adam & Eve”. 2 engravings in this set. SECOND STATE. 1585, numbered plates 3 and 4 (from original set of 8). Ref: New Hollstein 3.2-4.2 (van den Broeck). Conceptual artist, Crispijn van den Broeck (signature and monogram, pl.3). Engraver, Jan Sadeler I (signature, both plates). Publisher, Gerard de Jode, Thesaurus sacrarum historiarum, 1585. From the “Creation” series of 8 plates. Engravings uncut on laid paper, with wide margins 13.5″ x 10.5″. Images are “worn” yet even impressions. Significant older repairs to closed tears on each plate, not well done, noticeable at the bottom and side margins of the plates, esp. pl.3, erasure of the letters “Exig” in Exiguo to the bottom left side); creases and depressions to both plates. Each engraving is quite detailed, from the first series in de Jode’s work (these first plates were subject to the hardest wear, and a are rare even in this ill-repaired set). Still a fine set, with the artists’ signatures and monograms.

[Plate 3] Creation of Adam. [Plate 4] Creation of Eve.

2 engravings and COA are set a museum-quality Bifold Portfolios (landscape) of linen cloth and silk moire, within archival sleeves. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature, set in a museum-quality Bifold Portfolio.
