Description

“DINAH AND SHECHEM”. FIRST STATE. Plate 1 (of 4) in the series “The Story of Dina and Shechem,” actually titled “The Rape of Dina by Shechem”. Conceptual Artist: Maarten Heemskerck. Engraver: Harmen Muller (signature). Publisher: Gerard de Jode (signature). Reference: New Hollstein 31.1 (Heemskerck). Image cut outside of plate, 9.65″ x 8.0″, on laid paper. A clean and sharp, exceptionally delicate and highly detailed impression. Verso: evidence of older hanging tape to upper corners. A superior example of Netherlandish engraving in its heyday, exquisitely detailed. The scene is from the story in Genesis 34 that begins with the rape of Dina (Jacob’s daughter by Leah) and ends by the slaughter of Shechem and his male relatives by Dina’s brothers.

Engraving and COA set in a museum-quality Bifold Portfolio of linen cloth and silk moire, within archival sleeves; COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature.
