Description
“The First Work of God”. Engraver unknown, printed in Johann Scheuchzer’s opus Physica Sacra, Vol. 1, Augsburg, Germany, 1731. Uncut plate on medium weight laid paper, plate 12″ x 7.75″. With margins, 12.5″ x 9″. Blank verso. Excellent condition, but 3/4 of the paper suffers from the shadow of a printed page; small smudges to bottom edge (see pics). Scene inspired by the creation account in Genesis 1, the separation of light from darkness. A finely detailed impression, with many shades of darkness pierced by the light of day. Caption in Latin and German.
