Description

1 CORINTHIANS 1:1-9. Title. “Grace be with you, and peace . . .” (1:3). With ROMANS 15:25-16:27 (end). FIRST EDITION. Printed in Geneva by Rouland Hall, 1560. Translated by W. Whittingham, et.al. Reference: Herbert 107. The earliest English Bible printed [both] in Roman type and with verse divisions.  FINE condition; wrinkled lower outer corner; light stain to upper margins; pin-hole to lower inner margin (see pics); otherwise quite clean. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper w. gold seal. Leaf is exceedingly rare! Just once in 13 years have I seen a genuine 1560 leaf offered — there have been many claimants, however.

In this title leaf, Paul greets the Corinthians with “grace” (that is, God’s “gift” of Christ) and “peace” (that is, the benefit of Christ — or, reconciliation to God, and thus also among Jews and Gentiles). In Paul’s final words to the Romans, and also his last recorded words in the New Testament, he recalls that “grace” (16:24) and restates his “gospel” (16:25-26) that leads to “obedience of faith” (see also 1:5), that is, the obedience to God which is faith-in-Christ. A title, and summary of the Gospel — not bad for one leaf!

Original Leaf and COA set in a museum-quality Bifold Portfolio. Facsimile of 1560 title page included.
