“JUDITH AND HOLOFERNES”. FIRST STATE. “The Head of Holofernes Shown to the People of Bethulia” plate 7 of 8 in the series “Judith and Holofernes”, 1564. Conceptual Artist: Maarten Heemskerck (signature, on the pedestal). Engraver: Philips Galle. Publisher: Hieronymus Cock. Reference: New Hollstein 213.1. Image cut just outside of plate, 9.75″ x 8.0″. Gallery stamp, verso. A clean and sharp, delicate impression, highly detailed. Verso: evidence of older hanging tape and glue to corners. An excellent example of Netherlandish engraving in its heyday, exquisitely detailed. The scene is from the story in Judith 13, where Judith saves the Israelite army by insinuating herself in the company of Holofernes, the opposing general.
