PSALMS 50:11-55:1. “Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God” (51:10). FIRST EDITION. Known as The Great “She” Bible, the “Queen” of 1611 Bibles. First editorial correction of the original, uncorrected “He” variant, differing chiefly in obscure spellings, word spacing and woodcuts. Census about 175 “He” and 450 “She” Bibles extant. Printed in 1611 (and immediately thereafter) and published 1611-1613, in London, by Robert Barker, according to extant title pages. Experts disagree whether the “He” and the “She” should count as a single edition with two variants, or as two distinct editions. Reference: Herbert 319. All 59-line folio leaves (1611 He, 1611 She, 1617, 1634, 1640) are interchangeable, so buyer beware. Nonetheless, each leaf can be determined with certainty.
EXCELLENT condition with wide margins, 16.0″ x 10.75″. Micro-cuts (binding holes) to inner margin and micro-curl to outer edge; creased outer corners (see pics). 5 WOODCUT initials, 1 inhabited “H”. Psalm 51 is clearly the star of this leaf, cited everywhere that “sin” and “repentance” are taken seriously. Worthy as well is the realization that “all have sinned” (53:3) which Paul applies and cites in Romans (3:10-12) and elsewhere. This theme is especially important for the Pauline “gentile mission” that is foundational for the NT gospel. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with signature and seal. Leaf and COA set in a museum-quality Archival Booklet with archival sleeves. Includes Priority Shipping.
