Description
PSALMS 83:11-88:5. “JEHOVAH: The Most High God” (83:18). FIRST EDITION. Known as The Great “She” Bible, the “Queen” of 1611 Bibles. First editorial correction of the original, uncorrected “He” variant, differing chiefly in obscure spellings, word spacing and woodcuts. Census about 175 “He” and 450 “She” Bibles extant. Printed in 1611 (and immediately thereafter) and published 1611-1613, in London, by Robert Barker, according to extant title pages. Experts disagree whether the “He” and the “She” should count as a single edition with two variants, or as two distinct editions. Reference: Herbert 319. All 59-line folio leaves (1611 He, 1611 She, 1617, 1634, 1640) are interchangeable, so buyer beware. Nonetheless, each leaf can be determined with certainty.
FINE condition with wide margins, 16.0″ x 10.5″. Light handling, a small spot in the heading on both sides; 1 small hole in the heading margin, and an irregular hole under the initial “B” at Ps 86, and in the heading to Ps 85. With 5 WOODCUT initials, 3 inhabited in “L”, in “H”, and in “O”. The Psalms on this leaf are important in different ways. The rare name of God, JEHOVAH, is cited as the “Most High [God] over all the earth” (83:18). Psalm 85 pleads for Israel’s release from captivity, citing the lyrical “righteousness and peace have kissed each other” (85:10). And Psalm 86:15 declares that Israel’s God is compassionate and gracious, long-suffering, great in mercy and truth. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with signature and seal. Leaf and COA set in a museum-quality Archival Booklet with archival sleeves. Includes Priority Shipping.
