The Mercies of Christ (Emblem). Antwerp, 1595. From the series “Dominica Post Pentecosten” – the First Sunday After Pentecost, depicting scenes from Matthew 8 and Luke 6. Conceptual artist, Marteen de Vos (signature). Engraver, Karel van Mallery (signature). Probable publisher, either Philips Galle or Joannes Galle. A clean and sharp impression, uncut, on laid paper. Image is 9″ x 5.75″. With margins 11″ x 8.2″. This “emblematic” engraving of was designed as a teaching aid and originated with the Jesuit community; note the letters A thru G in the engraving, and the legend below. This fine example comes from the “After Pentecost” season, depicting 7 allegorical scenes A thru G.

Engraving and COA set in a museum-quality Bifold Portfolio, of linen cloth and silk moire, within archival sleeves; COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature.
