Description
MATTHEW 3:6-8:4. 2-leaf Set. “Baptism, Temptation, Sermon on Mount, Lord’s Prayer”. Geneva Bible. Printed in Geneva by John Bodley, 1562 (NT d.1561). Large Folio Edition (12.25″ x 8.7″, slightly shaved bottom edge), Roman type, the Second Geneva Bible (after the smaller 1560 editio princeps), Herbert 116. Known as “The Whig Bible” due to an error in Matthew 5:9 reading: “Blessed (are) the place makers.” This error, rare in itself, is within the text of this leaf!! Someone had sought to correct the spelling of “peace” (see close-up pic). FINE- condition overall; moderate edge stains, frayed lower corner (see pics). Older marginal notes in pen. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper w. gold seal. The two leaves (3:6-5:37 and 5:38-8:4) in this set are placed in a museum quality Larger Bifold Portfolio. COA and NT title facsimile set in a Medium Bifold Portfolio. Text includes some of the most beloved sayings of Jesus, including the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer. A terrific leaf-set that is iconic for this early edition!!
