Description
ISAIAH 11:12-14:18. “Jehovah v. Lucifer” (12:2; 14:12). FIRST EDITION. Known as The Great “She” Bible, the “Queen” of 1611 Bibles. First editorial correction of the original, uncorrected “He” variant, differing chiefly in obscure spellings, word spacing and woodcuts. Census about 175 “He” and 450 “She” Bibles extant. Printed in 1611 (and immediately thereafter) and published 1611-1613, in London, by Robert Barker, according to extant title pages. Experts disagree whether the “He” and the “She” should count as a single edition with two variants, or as two distinct editions. Reference: Herbert 319. All 59-line folio leaves (1611 He, 1611 She, 1617, 1634, 1640) are interchangeable, so buyer beware. Nonetheless, each leaf can be determined with certainty.
FINE condition; see pics, 15.25″ x 10″; quarter size stain just above the “T”. With 3 WOODCUT initials. This section of Isaiah contains an oracle against Babylon. Interesting is the older name “LORD JEHOVAH” (12:2) for the God of Israel. Against the God of Israel stands “Lucifer, sonne of the morning” (Lucifer or ‘light-bearer’ is the Latin equivalent of the Hebrew ‘Hillel’ or morning star) who, mythologically, had “fallen from heaven” (14:12). At stake then, on a cosmic scale, is the destiny of all the nations. The God of Israel, as the God of all creation, will of course prevail. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper w. signature and seal. Leaf and COA set in a museum-quality Archival Booklet with archival sleeves. Includes Priority Shipping.
