Description

The Byble, 1549. ISAIAH 7:25-9:21. “Unto Us a Child is Born” (9:6-8). RARE. Known either as the “Tyndale-Matthew Bible” or the “Matthew’s Bible” or the “Thomas Matthew Bible,” but published simply as “The Byble.” This edition, a close reprint of the First Edition (1537), was printed in London by John Daye with edited notes by Edmund Becke. The Byble is the translated work of both William Tyndale (1536) and Miles Coverdale (1535). The text here, from Isaiah, is the unedited translation of Coverdale (1535). Leaf here is folio size, uncut, 11.5″ x 7.5″, in an unusual Black Letter type. 65 lines/col. Ref: Herbert 74. While not as rare as the first edition, this early reprint one boasts an unedited text. The text of this leaf, from the major prophet Isaiah, is calling Israel to repent of her sins or face God’s wrath, yet it also contains great promises for a repentant Israel; see 9:6-8. The text on this leaf is one of the most beloved and well-known in Isaiah, and a basis for Handel’s Messiah.

Leaf is in FINE+ condition overall, text clean with full margins and marginal notes; light stain-spots to inner margin (see pics). Leaf is Folio lii [=52] with two small Chapter Woodcut initials, one inhabited. COA on premium “gold leaf” paper w. gold seal. Leaf and COA are set in a large, museum quality, Bifold Portfolio.
