Description
DEUTERONOMY 3:13-5:27. “The Ten Commandments!” Printed in Basel, Switzerland, by Johannes von Amerbach, 1481. Small folio size: 10.75″ x 7.8″. Red-edged, with two larger initials in Red. The second of Amerbach’s Bibles that are based on Greek ande Hebrew sources rather than the standard Latin Vulgate, identical to the first d.1479. FINE- condition overall. Shaved headlines, minor stains, notably to lower outer corner and marginal thumb-print; two small worm-holes (see pics). Text happily includes the whole narrative of Moses receiving The Ten Commandments from God. A very popular leaf from an early Bible that does not simply repeat the Latin Vulgata, and a leading indicator that “forced” some Bible translators to be more accurate and accessible to scholars/martyrs who would ultimately translate the Bible into vernacular languages. Leaf and COA are set in a museum-quality, Bifold Portfolio.
