Description
“CHRIST APPEARING TO THOMAS”. UNKNOWN STATE (but probably first/only). Printed in G. de Jode’s monumental Thesaurus Novi Testamenti, 1580-1585. Conceptual Artist: Maarten de Vos. Engraver: Unknown, but probably G. de Jode. Publisher: Gerard de Jode. Reference: Unknown (see Geheugen van Nederland, the Museum). Image cut to plate and pasted onto heavier laid paper, 10.25″ x 7.6″; full margins 13″ x 10″. A clean and sharp, bold impression, detailed, lightly “washed” to simulate antiquity (a normal process). Note: “wavy” paper on margins is not evident on the plate. A fine example of Netherlandish engraving in its heyday, nicely detailed. The scene is from the story in John 20.
Engraving and COA set in a large museum-quality Bifold Portfolio of linen cloth and silk moire, within archival sleeves; COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature.
