Description
“The Presentation of Jesus” and “The Circumcision of Jesus” – 2 engravings (set). Second State. 1585. Plates #2 and #3, numbered lower left within plates) from a larger 14 plate set entitled “Scenes In and Around the Temple,” based on Luke 2. Reference: New Hollstein 618.2-619.2 (Doetecum). For both engravings: conceptual artist, Gerard Groenning (or Groeningen). Engraver, Lucas van Doetecum. Publisher, Gerard de Jode. Originally published in 1572, reprinted 1585. See British Museum exemplars which have added personages with the same plate numbers, so it is uncertain if these are First or Second State; see notes in pencil along the margins. Engravings are cut close to the plate and pasted down on heavy laid paper, and measure 11.25″ x 7.75″ with wide margins 14″ X 10.” Both plates are clear and sharp impressions with subtle architectural details. Engravings are visually stunning, and together make for a fine visual pairing.
Engravings set in a museum-quality Bifold Portfolio (landscape) of linen cloth and silk moire, within archival sleeves; COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature, set in a medium Bifold Portfolio.
