Description
Slaughter of the Innocents. Second State, 1585. Plate 9 in the series, “The Childhood of Christ.” New Hollstein 64.2 (Groeningen or Groenning); the first state in 1574 is in the “Youth of Christ” series. Conceptual artist, G. Groeningen. Engraver, Jan Sadeler I. Publisher, Gerard de Jode. Engraving is richly detailed with subtle shadings over various scenes, cut to the plate and pasted onto heavy laid paper, 10″ x 8.25″, full margins 14″ x 10.75.” Apparent “waviness” to margins (see picture) does not affect the plate. This magnificent though violent engraving depicts a scene from Matthew 2, Herod’s attempt to kill the newborn King of the Jews.
Engraving and COA are presented in a museum-quality landscape portfolio of black linen cloth and burgundy silk moire. COA is on premium “gold-leaf” paper with gold seal and signature.
