Description

STORY OF JEPHTHAH. Set of 4 plates, complete. FIRST STATE, likely printed in 1570 but not published until 1585, unnumbered plates. Original design artist: Hans Bol (signature). Engraver: Unknown, but possibly Antonius Wierix. Original publisher: Gerard de Jode (signature). Reference: Hollstein 325-328 (Bol). Plates unnumbered, with contemporaneous numbering 87-90 at upper right just above the plate line. Overall, the plates are excellent, quite clean, detailed, and sharp impressions; uncut plates with full margins on fine laid paper. Engraving size: 11″ x 7.75″. Full, uncut sheet: 13.5″ x 11″. The story, often called “Jephthah’s Daughter,” is inspired from the Book of Judges, the horrific story of Jephthah making a vow for victory in war that resulted in his execution of his daughter.
