Publisher, Hieronymus Cock (signature). Image cut just outside the plate 8.75″ x 6″; tape remnants on reverse due to prior framing. Clean and sharp impression, albeit scattered light foxing throughout (see pics). A delightful, iconic depiction of St. John with his Gospel in hand and a large symbolic eagle. [This image, but with St. John’s Gospel facing us, was modeled on the smaller iconic engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, after Georg Pencz (1539). The image, broadly speaking, has become embedded in the imagination ever since.]
