“PENTECOST: Descent of the Holy Ghost”. FIRST STATE, 1580. Conceptual Artist: Maarten de Vos. Engraver: Ambrosius Francken (possibly). Publisher: Gerard de Jode. Reference: Hollstein 507 (de Vos). Image cut to plate, mounted on paper, 10.8″ x 8.2″; with full margins, 13″ x 10″. A clean and sharp impression. Plate is “washed” to show “antiquity” (per usual). A fine example of Netherlandish engraving in its heyday, nicely detailed with several scenes in foreground and background; the scene is taken from Acts 2, but with Mary at the center, very unusual.
Engraving and COA set in a large museum-quality Bifold Portfolio of linen cloth and silk moire, within archival sleeves; COA on premium “gold leaf” paper with gold seal and signature.
