Description
LUKE 4:41-6:49. “Beatitudes!” (Eng. trans. 6:20-37, various). V. RARE. Illuminated in Paris, France, c.1230. Three initial scrolls in Red and Blue w. extended marginalia. Full margins, on fine vellum. 6.6″ x 4.8″, 53 lines per col. (indicative of an early date in the 2nd quarter of the 13th century). FINE- condition; ink fading and small pieces of older hanging tape on recto side; text of the Beatitudes unaffected on verso side; small stain to inner bottom corner (see pics). COA on premium “gold leaf” paper w. gold seal. An early example of a “pocket bible” suitable for carrying on the Crusades, especially nice because it’s text includes the Beatitudes (“Blessed are …”). For larger manuscripts, see the “Bifold Portfolios” category.
